For weeks he searched everywhere: newspaper ads, dealerships, friends, and online listings. Most cars were either too expensive or in terrible shape. Then one afternoon, he spotted an ad that made him blink twice: an almost-new Porsche in excellent condition for $50.
Certain it had to be a mistake, he called the number.
— Yes, I placed the ad, the woman said. The price is indeed $50. The car is in the garage. Come and look at it.
That same afternoon, he took the bus to her address. An older woman opened the door and led him to the garage. There it was: a beautiful Porsche, nearly new, just as promised.
— May I drive it around the block? he asked.
— Of course, she said, and climbed in with him.
The car drove like a dream. Still stunned, the young man handed over $50. The woman gave him the papers, and just like that, the Porsche was his.
Weeks went by. He showed the car to his parents, friends, and co-workers, and everyone had the same question: why would anyone sell a Porsche for $50?
Finally, he could not stand it anymore. He went back to the woman’s house and asked her directly.
With a half-smile, she replied, “My husband ran off with his secretary a few days ago and left a note instructing me to sell the car and the house, and send him the money.”
