I’m an arborist, which means I make my living caring for trees. I love them: beautiful, patient, ancient living things.
Three years ago, the city council of Redondo Beach, California ordered my 30-year-old pepper tree, Clyde, to be cut down because his roots had begun lifting the sidewalk in front of my house. Then you made me pay for the sidewalk repairs and for the tree removal.
I loved Clyde. I had planted him knowing he would likely live far beyond me. I drained his soil, supported him when he was young, and watched him grow into a strong, healthy tree.
Just as Clyde was spreading his roots and building a proper canopy, the city took him from me.
But Clyde will be avenged.
Mayor Steve Aspel. You killed my child. For this, you will pay.
Two years and seven months ago, I secretly planted 45 California redwoods and 82 giant sequoias in parks, yards, and public properties all over your city.
By now, each root system is deeply embedded in the soil. You may have noticed the trees growing near city hall, or the new one that sprouted in your backyard. That one is a giant sequoia, and its growth will accelerate rapidly in the coming months.
You killed Clyde, but I have replaced him with more than 100 living giants. And giants they will become. In a few years, they will reach 100 to 300 feet and can live more than 2,500 years.
Removing even one of them now will cost well over $1,500. And I am leaving you with the bill, just like you did to me three years ago today.
